YOU’LL LET YOURSELF DOWN BEFORE YOU’LL LET SOMEONE ELSE DOWN.
Everyone has goals, but when you don’t achieve them it’s easy to push your deadline, or simply give up on them.
This activity helps you understand how your goals impact others. If you can focus on how others benefit you will have more resilience and a greater likelihood to achieve your goals than if you think that you are the only person you will be letting down if your goals are not reached.
This activity can be used to compliment a Persona or help individuals connect with the Persona in a way that resonates with them. Another popular use is to connect your own individual personal goals with others to help you do whatever it takes to successfully reach them.
What to do:
❶ Use the template.
❷ Generate a numbered list of tangible goals for yourself in the top-right Tangible/Self quadrant. Number them so it is easy to connect your lists in the other quadrants to each specific goal.
❸ Thinking about one goal at a time, in the bottom-right Intangible/Self quadrant, write down (with the corresponding number) how it will make you feel when each goal is successfully achieved.
❹ Now, move over to the left side of the activity and think about how others (your customers, employees, friends, family, etc.) would be impacted by achieving each individual goal. Labelling with the corresponding number, write down how others will benefit in a tangible way in the top-left Tangible/Others quadrant.
❺ Finally, make your way to the final quadrant in the bottom-left corner, Intangible/Others, and write down how others will feel when they get each corresponding tangible benefit.
❻ Now, circle the bottom-left quadrant and focus on this. If you can make this your focus, instead of the tangible goals for yourself, you will be more likely to succeed.
