Success can be defined a whole bunch of ways. Some people think of it as money in the bank, super cars and homes in exotic destinations they fly to in their private jet all around the world. Some view success as a full calendar, while others in the amount of free time they can carve away. Others think of moments they felt a sense of pride and joy, or times where they went above and beyond to make their customers happy.
By discussing what keeps individual members motivated, you’ll be able to discover common themes that drive your team as a whole. This will support better communication, ability to coach individuals, and a higher performance workplace culture. Most activities use words, but this one leads with moments you can see in your mind and draw as a picture. The part of your brain this tool taps into is different from the part of the brain that manages language, so it is intentional to draw and avoid using words to describe the moment of what success looks like to each participant.
What to do:
❶ Ask each team member to draw a picture of a time they felt successful in the past or a moment of them achieving a goal in the future that would make them feel successful.
❷ Once everyone’s drawings are complete, share your ideas of success with each other.
❸ Look for similar ideas and common themes.
❹ Document key ideas and shared themes for future reference.
